Most people type a few words into an AI tool, get a so-so result, and decide AI is overrated. The tool was fine. The prompt was the problem.

Here is a formula you can use every time to get sharper results: Role, Task, Details.

1. Role: tell it who to be

Start by telling the AI what kind of expert to act like. This sets the tone and the quality bar.

  • "You are a friendly copywriter for small businesses."
  • "You are a social media manager who writes punchy captions."

2. Task: say exactly what you want

Be specific about the output. One clear task beats a vague wish.

  • "Write 5 Instagram captions for a new coffee blend."
  • "Turn these bullet points into a short email to my customers."

3. Details: give it the context

This is where the magic happens. The more real detail you add, the more it sounds like you.

  • Who is the audience?
  • What is the vibe: warm, bold, funny?
  • Any must-include facts: price, date, offer?

Put it together

You are a friendly copywriter for a local bakery. Write 5 Instagram captions announcing our new sourdough. Keep the tone warm and a little playful, and mention that it sells out by noon.

That one prompt beats "write bakery captions" every time.
